Golf is an important segment of the tourism economy, and has helped to bring this area national recognition. In 1999, the Grand Strand boasted 104 completed golf courses. Estimates show that approximately 4.23 million total rounds of golf were played. The Myrtle Beach area is host to the PGA Ingersoll-Rand Senior Tour Championship. The 1994-1999 Senior Championships were televised on ESPN. Many of the local courses host major professional and amateur golf tournaments including the Kathy Ireland-Greens.com LPGA, and the DuPont World Amateur Handicap Championship, which in 1999 was named South Carolina’s Most Outstanding Tourism Event of the Year. Although golf is played throughout the year, spring and autumn are the busiest seasons due to the milder climate and off-season accommodation rates.
